10 Tools for Becoming a Great Networker
Lesley Roth Maloney, Pharm.D., Clinical Specialist, The Medical Affairs Company
1. Do your homework. If you know you’re going to be in a specific situation or in the presence of someone with whom you want to connect, come prepared with some advance knowledge or something that will connect you in a memorable way.
2. Take names. We align our mission with people who will help us achieve it. Remember
the names of important contacts you’ve made, and keep a database of contacts.
3. Reach out and meet someone. View meeting new people as a challenge and opportunity. Release your inner wallflower and go for it.
4. Manage the gatekeeper. Show your interest by displaying curiosity and be prepared without being a know-it-all.
5. Share your passions. Similar interests are the building blocks for any relationship. Utilize your passions as another opportunity to develop a new network.
6. Follow up or fail. Take the extra step to be memorable and follow up within 24–48 hours; reaffirm your commitments; express gratitude.
7. Be a conference commando. Utilize conferences to meet like-minded people who can help you achieve your mission and goals.
8. Connect the dots. Find someone who is a super-connector and share your circles.
9. Perfect the art of small talk. Start a conversation, get others involved, and listen.
10. Start with the basics. By keeping things simple at the start, you will encourage loyal and lasting relationships.
