Why Participate in PPS

PPS is a national pharmacy recruiting event that takes place annually at ASHP’s Midyear Clinical Meeting. Students seeking a PGY-1 residency and current residents seeking a PGY-2 residency are strongly encouraged to participate in PPS. It is a vital step in the process of securing the residency program you want to Match with. Many residency programs participate in PPS to conduct initial screenings of candidates. They use this screening period to determine who they are most likely to invite to their site for a comprehensive interview and how they will rank candidates for the Match. Many residency seekers feel they can obtain this level of information at the Residency Showcase. However, it is not realistic because the hours of the Showcase are limited and there is not enough time to make a decision. Further, if you attend the Showcase and a program invites you for a PPS interview you will not be able to do so unless you're registered. Pre-registering for PPS allows you the time to fully prepare for the event and saves money because the fee is doubled once you're onsite. Finally, and most importantly, participation in PPS allows you one on one time with the programs you are interested in to ask detailed questions about the program and determine your level of interest. Residency selection is determined by the Match process and candidates who have taken the time to meet programs through several channels (including the Showcase, PPS and residency site interviews) are at a distinct advantage to those who simply hand over their CV or submit an application and participate in the Match.
